The questions UK charities and community transport operators ask us most often.
Do we need a special permit to operate a community transport minibus?
Most community transport organisations operate under a Section 19 or Section 22 permit rather than a full PSV operator's licence, which allows you to carry passengers for a fare without needing a standard bus licence — provided the service isn't run for profit. Our team can advise on vehicle specification alongside your permit type, but for the permit application itself we'd always recommend checking directly with your local licensing authority or the Community Transport Association.
Can our volunteer drivers drive the minibus on a standard car licence?
Many of our lightweight minibus options can be driven on a standard category B car licence (no separate D1 entitlement needed), provided the driver meets the relevant age and licence-holding requirements. This varies by vehicle size and weight, so let us know your volunteers' circumstances and we'll point you to the right minibus.
Do you offer wheelchair accessible vehicles?
Yes. We supply minibuses with ramps, tail lifts, and flexible seating layouts designed for mixed ambulant and wheelchair-using passengers, which is often essential for community transport and day centre services.
What's the difference between leasing and buying for a charity?
Buying (Outright Purchase or Hire Purchase) means you own the vehicle, which suits organisations that have secured a capital grant earmarked specifically for a vehicle purchase. Leasing (Contract Hire) spreads the cost into a single fixed monthly payment, which can include maintenance and servicing, and suits charities whose income comes from a mix of grants, fundraising, and fares rather than one lump sum. We can talk you through both against your organisation's funding position.
Can you provide a quote to support our grant application?
Yes. Many funders — from local authority BSIP-funded schemes to the Motability Foundation and EV-specific grant funds — require a costed supplier quote on headed paper before they'll assess an application. We can provide this at no cost and before any funding decision is made.
How does an electric minibus work for our service?
Electric minibuses typically offer a real-world range suited to local, stop-start community transport routes, and cost less to run day-to-day than diesel equivalents. Range and charging needs depend on your typical journey lengths and depot setup, so we'll talk through your actual routes before recommending a model.
Does the price include maintenance?
Under a Contract Hire agreement, servicing, maintenance, and MOTs can be built into your fixed monthly cost, so there are no surprise bills partway through the year. Under Outright Purchase or Hire Purchase, maintenance is arranged separately, and we're happy to advise on that too.
Can charities reclaim VAT on a minibus?
This depends on your charity's VAT status and how the vehicle is used, so we'd always recommend checking with your accountant or HMRC directly — we can provide the figures you need for that conversation, but we can't give VAT advice ourselves.
What if we're not sure whether to lease, buy, or wait for grant funding?
That's a very normal position to be in. Get in touch and talk it through with our team — there's no obligation, and it often helps to have the vehicle and funding conversation at the same time rather than one after the other.
